Take a boat trip to gorgeous little Antipaxos island from neighbouring Paxos and discover one of the undisputed hidden gems of the Ionian Sea with exotic beaches and irresistible bays It’s as if the Ionian Islands took everything that makes them unique – the impossible shades of blue and lush greenery – and created perfection in miniature when it comes to two of its smallest isles. So when you visit tiny Paxos, don’t think twice about also spending the day with its even cuter little brother, Antipaxos. Postage stamp-sized it might be, but Antipaxos makes a huge impression on day-trippers from Paxos or Corfu. Its beaches routinely feature in international best-of lists, and its romantic bays are the kind you instantly want to frame and hang on the wall of your living room. There are 150 houses on Antipaxos, but only two are inhabited during the winter months. And exploring the island on foot couldn’t be easier, with a path running down the centre that takes only an hour to cover. Naturally, boat trips to Antipaxos focus on the beaches, but the cute little harbour is also charming. And too often overlooked is an interior of olive groves, vineyards and indigenous shrubs and forestland that seem to make every bit of this 4km2 island an earthly paradise. Taxi boats from the main towns of Gaios, Lakka and Longos to Antipaxos are quite frequent so getting here or out of here should not be a problem at all.

"neroladia" (water & oil)
Apart from the many traditional festivals, religious mainly, that takes place from May until September there is also the festival of “Neroladia” that takes place in mid-July, where olive oil, onions, bread, and boiled potatoes along with local wine and music are offered to the visitors of the island.

Usually the religious feasts, after the morning church services, are followed by traditional music, dancing, food and drink, offered at an open feast. On the 29th of June Agios Gaios is celebrated in the presence of the Bishop and the Corfu Philharmonic. There is a ferry boat operating routes from and to Corfu especially for the day. On the 18th of July the festival of Agios Emilianos is held on the island of Antipaxi. Prophet Elias is celebrated in Lakka on the 20th of July. On the 15th of August, the island honours the Holy Virgin. First things first: locals go to mass in the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Gaios. After they spill out of the church and onto the street, the partying starts, with dancing till the late hours. Parking can become a challenge in Gaios and the island’s few taxi will be fully booked. If you feel like joining in the party, prepare to stay sober or sleep on the town’s beach.
Paxos reggae festival
The Paxos Reggae Festival was first held in 2015. It offers concerts, DJ sets, workshops and other activities aimed at bridging cultural differences and promoting respect. It is organized by a team of enthusiasts from Italy, the UK, and of course Greece. This festival usually takes place over a weekend in August, and is held on the main square of the island’s capital – Gaios. With a dancehall area and drinks available, this festival is fast becoming a local favourite.
